I would avoid the council estates... which are dotted around everywhere but
the worst ones are in South East London (around New Cross/Peckham) and in
Hackney... but otherwise there really is nowhere particularly unsafe in
London. You hear of the occasional drug related shooting in Harringay,
Tottenham and Brixton, but if you're not involved in the drug trade you
won't be affected.

Londoner here...
It's not true. London is a very dangerous city (speaking from experience here). But just because it's on the same scale as New York or Paris. So think of it as if you're visiting New York. Stick to the tourist areas and don't venture into parts which you do not know. ;)
I've been to Rome, Milan and other European cities, and they ARE safe. You can travel anywhere...at any time of the night and you have to be REALLY unlucky for anything to happen to you. Even criminals in Italy are lightwieght and if you show a little resistence, they will usually run off.
London is different unfortunately. For example...don't get into a fight on a bus. Many violent, deranged people use the busses. I can point you to COUNTLESS incidents of very serious injuries/murders which have occured by arguing with someone on a bus. Don't venture into Peckham, Hackney (Wick or Marsh), Tottenham (South or Hale). Lots of places in East London...Bow, etc.
We can all lie and give the impression London is a safe place, but it's not. It's like New York...basically. Be wary and you'll be safe and enjoy yourself more. Remember that criminals in all parts of the world target tourists as "easy targets".

London is a reletively safe city. There are of course a couple of areas best not to travel but to be honest, as a tourist you wouldn't find yourself there anyway. Like any major city, you should be careful when travelling alone at night - but don't be scared - Londoners (male and female) travel on the tube until very late at night with no trouble at all. I don't know where you are from but I'm sure you'll have no problems in London and have a fantastic stay. Its one of the most exciting places in the world to visit and by taking simple precautions as you would in any other city, you'll have a wonderful stay.

Everywhere. Pickpockets and bag snatchers be on your guard for these. You might want to take care on the underground or where there are large crowds of people.
Other than that, have a great time in London.
