I've watched the night shows religously for many years. Everything was normal then it's like all of a sudden this guy is just on the Jay Leno show with his stupid cup of coffee and they introduce him at the beginning of every show. This has been going on for at least a year or two and I still have no idea why he's on the show. He participates in skits sometimes now but other than that what is it that he does to be on the show??

John Melendez became famous as part of the crew on the Howard Stern Radio Show (he started working for Stern in the late 80s). Stern liked that he consistently stuttered and had John conduct interviews with various celebrities at red carpet events.
In 2004, The Tonight Show approached John for the announcer gig and John left New York for LA. Stern has claimed that Leno pursued John to appeal to a younger male demographic and that this is just another example of how Leno steals from other performers due to his own lack of creativity and originality.

He was formerly known as Stuttering John from the Howard Stern Show. I'm not sure what he contributes to Jay Leno.
