James Kim (August 9, 1971–c.December 5, 2006) was an American technology analyst.

They were only successfully located because a signal transmitted from the family's cell phone had been picked up by a cellular tower.[7] The signal was emitted when the Kim family's cell phone received a text message.[8] Authorities credit an employee of Oregon cell provider Edge Wireless with creating computer models to triangulate the phone location.[

Oregon does have a cell phone provide. James Kim & his family had a cell phone that received a text message. Authority was able to find a signal transmitted from the family's cell phone.

Can you find it, yet?

Do I need to spell it out to the people that don't see where I am going with this?

Why didn't he use his cell phone to call for help?

Living and using Edge Wireless in Oregon, I can tell you that the once you are more than a 1/2 mile off the highways, there is no cell tower signal to be found. Ever once in a while, you will get a VERY weak signal (it usually doesn't even register on your phone as being there or is only a single bar of the 5 shown). And often even on the highways the signal will drop to 0 due to the terrain.

To send a message out you need a stronger transmitter than you do to receive an incoming message (which is coming from a stronger transmitter). What most likely happened is their cell phone ran out of power, but like most batteries, will recharge slightly if left powered off (or perhaps they charged the cell phone with their car battery - it may well have lasted for the 2 weeks). But even charged they wouldn't be able to send out a message - only receive them.

I'm surprised they were able to get a signal at all, not that they weren't able to call out.

Here's a google map that shows the terrain. Perhaps this will help explain why the signal wouldn't get out (and the lodge that's shown on the map is closed for the winter - they might have found shelter there but still no cell phones.

Yes I hear what you are saying, but I still think your running away with this in the wrong direction. The transmissions that were brief and unsuccessful at being of any help, or who made those attempts, the remoteness of the area rendered them useless. If they helped in anyway at all, it's possible it helped the searchers narrow the field a bit. They have already stated, that the only reason they found the car, was because of the footprints left by James Kim around and leading to the car. That is why they have all been so emotional and calling him a hero. Though he made mistakes, and went through this terrible ordeal, he led them to his family regardless of any other circumstances. May he rest in peace.

Ask his wife. She's still alive: After being rescued in good condition Monday, Kim's 30-year-old wife, Kati, and daughters Penelope (4 years) and Sabine (7 months) have been reunited with family members. Kati Kim suffered frostbite on two toes, but will not lose those toes, according to a close family friend.
