It is a fandom for people who have some sort of interest in animals. These interests can range from the totally innocent (e.g. you enjoy nature programs about fur-bearing animals like foxes and wolves, and your favorite cartoon characters are non-human) to the unbelievably perverse. The latter represents only a small potion of Furry Fandom as a whole, but of course that's the part that gets the most media attention, sad to say.

The average Furry Fan is a collector, always on the lookout for good books, comics, artwork and other depictions of their favorite furry critters. Some Furry Fans try to write and draw their own stories and art, with varying degrees of success. At "Furry Conventions" such as Anthrocon (see link below), what mainly goes on is people talking to each other, meeting online friends and drawing in each other's sketchbooks. For more info on furry conventions, click the link.

Most members of Furry Fandom have never dressed up as an animal, and have no desire to do so. That is not to say that those who do are perverts -- many "fursuiters" (as they like to be called) are professional costumers who are sports mascots for hire, or work in theme parks like Disneyland or Magic Mountain.

So don't let the bad media rep scare you away. Furry Fandom is just like any other fandom -- meaning there's a lot of good clean enjoyment to be had, but there will always be some obnoxious attention-seeking types trying to spoil it for everyone else. Just do what I do and ignore them.

On the basis of what I have seen, it is a thinly-disguised attempt to push porn, saying, "But it's not real people, it's just furry animals...!" as though wearing a fur suit could protect you from venereal disease. As soon as I found out about that, I lost interest in it REAL FAST. Apparently, the 'artists' and 'writers' go to fan gatherings hoping to find cosplaying female fans with no 'conventions'. I wonder whether they want human females or if this is just a cover up for the species they REALLY want...?

Unless you have the desire to dress up like an animal on a semi-regular basis, you are not the furry type. I've heard some bad stuff about that community; there's an element of bestiality that gets thrown into it. You can see this in a lot of furry artwork....animal porn.
