If you have broadband such as cable you are always connected. To protect yourself, you can unplug the wire going from your modem to your harddrive when you are away. Thats the only way your comp is not connected to the internet.

Let's break this out, your PC has no power, so you cannot manipulate the hard drive or any files. Can someone gain access into your computer when it is in this state? No. The cable modem always being on and being connected however, does leave you vulnerable to trojans, viruses, hackers etc providing you do not take proper precautions. The only 100% safe computer, is the one never assembled, powerd on, and connected.

There is no risk. It is like unplugging the modem cable from your computer, it is basically a dead end. Chow

If you already shut off your PC, your PC will be save because it can't connect to your PC. But if your PC on standby and you activate modem riser, it can activate the PC.

As long as you PC is off your data will be safe.

Not at all. Once the computer is shut off you're in good shape.
