Libraries are usually set aside for people to do study or research in a mostly silent environment. Some people are offended by others taking up space to play a game that can be played elsewhere.
Chess is NOT a game of knowledge but that of WAR and STRATEGY. Hell, even spaecial Ed. people play chess.

No, it is not wrong to play chess in the library. As long everyone who plays it is quiet enough, then chess would be a great game for a library.

I remember the library I went to when young actually had a chess set there. A pretty nice one too - with carved figures.

If someone is trying to give you static for it, just request one of the private rooms such as students use for study. And for your backup plan, have a book of chess next to one of you and if questioned by the librarian...say you were just testing to see if the book was working properly.

I wouldn't say it is wrong, but you know some librarians have their policies and control issues. My local library has chess every Saturday, and it is a big success.

I have in my past ran into Conan the Librarian.

as long as we don't disturb others, be silent, no action that can distract people in the library; if necessary, can play it at some corner so to keep the disturbance to the minimum.
