Japanese Racism?
I would like to know how they treat Caucasians in Japan. I might consider moving there and would prefer if I got responses from people that actually live there. And no, I`m not those naive anime fans who believe Japan is the greatest in the world.

These answers are great but my question isn`t truly resolved yet. Another question, which part`s of Japan are much more welcoming or comfortable to live in? Rural or Urban areas? Examples please.

I forgot to mention that I`m still too young to move there on my own, and I`m looking for a foreign exchange program. Anybody know a cheap one? They are too expensive

you may find that some japanese are 'racist' but not in the same way that you may imagine. There is no malice in it and it is a result of the complexity of the culture. Japan is a wonderful place to live, you really should go. i lived in yokohama for two years and loved it. as far as where to live goes, it depends what you are after. in more rural areas (eg kofu in yamanashi where a friend of mine was livin), everything was small, cosy, welcoming and friendly. Yokohama is close to tokyo and is basically just one urban sprawl, altho it was hard to find friends at first i wouldn't have changed where i was living. japanese cities offer an excitement like nowhere else, you are constantly discovering new places to go, things to see etc and you end up meeting people all the time

The Japanese are, on the whole, more polite and more concerned with how they are perceived than Americans tend to be (not that Americans aren't but the Japanese are much more so); you probably won't see any obvert acts of racism direct towards you, but I've heard it can nonetheless be hard to be accepted. Case in point, a friend of mine went to a bar and he claimed the whole place turned silent when he entered into the place, all eyes fixed on him.

I think they have rather an inward racism. Their Prejudice ist addressed against other asian people like Korean or Chinese. This tendency is growing now according to the increasing criminal cases commited by asian foreigners. A deplorable and embarrassing fact I have to say.

Alot of the older Japanese people in Hawaii are kind of racist. You should be fine though. Rural areas are ghetto, and probably wouldn't host a foriegn exchange student anyways.

IF you are Blonde I heard that they stare at you. After all they are the most homogeneous culture. That popularity might just make you feel very special and boost your self esteem.

On the down side, they eat LOTS of fish and getting used to a different regiment for breakfast, lunch, and dinner might suck.

They are generally very polite and seem to have so much more class than many other cultures. I think you will be impressed
