Charity is probably more compatible with capitalism than it is with socialism. In a socialist state the government is supposed to take care of the less fortunate so in a perfect socialist state charity would be unnecessary. In a purely capitalist state the government would have no mandate to care for people in need so charity would be more necessary.

When the underclass is ignored by both the government and private charitable efforts the result is usually revolution.

There is no charity without capitalism... If we were living in a Utopian state where everyone was 'equal' and thereby afforded the same facilities and wealth as each other, the need for charity would be nil... everyone has everything they need so no need for charity.
However, the Utopian state cannot exist because of human nature... the need for a hierarchy, greed, jealousy, sloth (the stuff quoted in all religions and communist doctrines) etc.
Therefore, there will always be those at the top who have all and those at the bottom who need more just to live
Without any form of capitalism ... income generation via commerce and trade, there is no mechanism to support those at the bottom or the means to provide philanthropic support and charity.

In a capitalist country , the rich gets richer and poor gets poorer.. so to balance the system, private charitable institutions play a major role in propogating the charitable work through NGO's and other channels to help the poor and deserving .. whether capitalist govt or social govt rules the country the need for the charity remains and just may vary from country to country.. The government may help the less unfortunate people with social security system etc.in some countries . but still only govt. efforts are not sufficient to cope up with the magnanimity of the problem...charity to ONLY deserving persons or groups by philonthrophists, large hearted individuals and institutions reallly make up the gap between have's and havenot's...the slogan should be 'the more capitalist you are , try to be more charitable' to make it more compatible .
