What is bioinformatics or computational biology? I ask myself the same question everyday. Its not trivial to define what exactly it is, just like trying to define what science is or what engineering is, but I try my best.

Bioinformatics is a field of science that study or apply different mathematical, statistical, computational methods in understanding or making sense of data generated for biology.

Some famous bioinformatics problems include

1. Genome Assembly from shotgun sequencing (computer science)

2. Development of various Sequence Alignment Algorithmns (computer science)

3. Differential Gene expression identification from time-series microarray experiments (statistics)

4. Modelling of a signal transduction pathway. (mathematics, physics)

5. Protein Structural modelling, docking studies and molecular dynamic simulation. (biochemistry)
