no. The point of silent reading isn't just for you to read. the point of silent reading is to get you to read something of some kind of value.

Yes but they should be considered educational...business, National Geographic, etc... But many people may say that car magazines and make-up tips are educational...which they are as well...all depends what someone is in to....a person could be reading a hair cut magazine because they dream of becoming a stylist one day. So I think if a teacher wants to allow magazines in their class room, they should have the ones they want their students to read and not allow students to bring their own in. Almost every topic can be considered educational, depending on who is looking at it.

Many educators advocate something called FVR or "free voluntary reading" as a method to develop reading skills. The idea behind it is that students will read things that are of personal interest readily, and, through consistent use of their reading skills, they will become more and more proficient. Therefore, a wide variety of reading materials is made available for sustained silent reading, including magazines, and students are allowed to freely choose what they want to read. The purpose of reading the magazines (or whatever) is simply to practice reading. It does not mean that a teacher will stop providing quality stories, novels and articles which require more critical thinking.

Yes because it may not be the most appropriate thing to have during quiet reading but it will help the students to actually participate. The students might even look at silent reading as fun and they'd look forward to it. So maybe every other time, they should be allowed to read magazines for quiet reading. So they benefit and have fun at the same time.

Yes, reading is reading. If you don't read for enjoyment then reading becomes a chore. The more you read, the better you will become at reading (of course), writing and spelling!!
I have magazines for my students to read. And I allow them to bring them to school. I have educational magazines that are fun and have comics etc. in them. I don't mind students reading magazines unless they're like "Dolly Doctor" and sex and boys etc... Magazines about fashion, movies, animals, sports, music etc. are great!

Depends on the magazine. If the magazine is appropriate for the age of the child and does not pornography or profanity, then it should be permitted. The magazine should also have articles in it and not be a photo magazine.

Educational magazines like TIme. Or math and history class could use Forbes or Fortune. Gym and health classes could use Self and Fitness magazine. And to be a bit more intuitive for english, Soap Opera magazines could be used. Good question. ;)

Magazines centered around school related topics and content should be allowed. An example would be a creative writing course focused around a short story magazine and its content would be acceptable.

I'd have to say yes. If its not a mandated subject such as math, english etc. I say let a student read what they want (within reason). At least they are reading and to force them to read something they arent interested in is even worse because they aren't really reading it anyway, they are more or less staring at it. That defeats the purpose of having them read in the first place.

i don't understand what the situation is. If the youngster is analyzing quietly and is no longer nerve-racking all of us, there should not be a situation. that's "loose" analyzing time in spite of each and every thing. The boy could be allowed to study his bible if all the different babies are additionally allowed to compliment their own books. As an atheist, i won't be able to say that i like the belief of any baby analyzing the bible, yet legally speaking, he could have that top as long as his parent/dad and mom are happy with it, and it seems which you're. i do no longer see it as disrespectful till he's attempting to convice others to connect his church or too convince them of the legitability of the bible in the process type time. in my opinion, religious discussions at the instant are not ideal in the process faculty as they could reason disruptions. on a similar time, I merely won't be able to see any 8 year previous doing that. So i don't get what the lecturers situation is with it. I doubt you're able to sue for the bible element, yet for the crying element (emotional rigidity), possibly, counting on what precisely she stated or did. individually, i could've chewed the instructor a clean hollow if that replaced into my boy, yet it somewhat is merely me.
