6 males, 32 females
since 38 - the number of males equals the number of males times 5, plus 2:

38-x=5x+2
add x to each side
38=6x+2
subtract 2 from each side
36=6x
x=6 (males)
6*5=30
30+2=32 (females)
32+6=38

Let x be the number of males in the class. Then the total number of students in the class is:

x + (5x +2) = 6x + 2 = 38
6x = 36
x = 6
5x + 2 = 5*6 + 2 = 32

The number of males is 6 and the number of females is 32.

They never had lopsided classes like that when I was in school.

g + b = 38

g = 5b+2

substitue in first equation

5b+2 + b = 38
6b+2=38
6b=36
b=6
then girls = 6*5+2=32
assume b=6, g then = 5*6+2 = 32

g+b
