Hello,

This is my girlfriends first month taking a birth control pill--she is taking Novial.

She's had leakage for almost this entire month, now she is done with her first package of pills and we are supposed to wait 7 days before begining her new pack. She should have gotten her period, but because she has been leaking/spotting all month it is hard to tell if she has period or is just still leaking...

My Question is, Are we protected during this week? and does this sound normal?

She has a doctors appointment on the 22nd, but we've been having sex the past 2-days without her taking pills and we are both a little nervous about this, this is our first time using a birth control pill...

thank you very much for your help,
ray

Not all pills work for everyone the Dr may have to try her on several pills before he finds the one that will work for her. My daughter did the same thing. She went through this for 4 mo. before the Dr found one that was strong enough for her and no you are not safe. Good luck

The instructions say to start when you finish a period, and that they do not guarantee effectiveness until you've gone through a pack. For the first month also use alternate protection (i.e. condoms). The pill basically tries to override your ovaries etc. with specific doses of hormones. Certain hormones go up and down over the cycle; a certain level or change triggers each pahse of the cycle - start to develop the egg, release the egg, thicken then shed the uterine lining (if no egg implants). The pill fast-forwards your cycle to the point where it thinks an egg has already been released and is waiting for implantation. After 3 weeks of that you stop for a week (or take the other-coloured sugar pills) and your body goes into the "time for period" mode. Start next pack a week later. So in the first weeks when you start, your ovaries may not be willing to follow what the pill hormones are telling them to do. It is conceivable (sorry!) that you may have statred developing an egg, and the doses may just delay instead of stopping that ovulation. So odds are you're safe once you start the pill, but there's only one way to find out for sure and it takes 9 months; why chance it? How badly do you want to be NOT pregnant? Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Don't risk it. Send her to the doctor to get a different prescription. that one's not working for her.

No pill = no protection. Get her off the pill and use a rubber until things get sorted out.

The other question you have to ask is why the hell she hasn't gone and done that already? If any part of your body bled intermittently for a month, you would go see a doctor, right?

Spotting when you start the pill is very common. Just make sure she takes every pill when she is supposed to and you will probably be fine. Good luck.

u r better take precautions or advices from ur DR.actually a safe period 4 making love is 7 days before n 7 days after her mensuration.any day before n after that is considered NOT SAFE.y not u use condom instead of letting her taking pill which may have side-effect in the long run."prevention is better than cure".

take care.

The possibility is there. Why not take extra protection for time being, like using condom.

she should see her doctor right away, she should not spot at all, i dont know if you are protected because its certain that shes not tollerating that pill well at all.
