on november 15th, i went to a family planning clinic to get on the pill. i had had some itching down there, so they did a swab, looked at it under the microscope, and told me i had trich (i got it from my bf). anyway. they gave me metronidazole to take in one dose. my boyfriend and i both took it that night. the symptoms got worse at first, but about 9 days later, my symptoms were gone. then i had my period the next week. well, i have been off of my period for about a week now, and my boyfriend and i just started having sex again, and now all the trich symptoms are back. i thought it was gone. my pap smear came back fine from the 15th. what could be wrong with me? did the metronidazole just not work? this is getting really irritating now, i thought it was gone but no, the symptoms are definitely back.

I have the same problem my bf was treated the same time as i was the next week it was back. I got tired of this back and forth std thing. The doctor always say that my bf dosent have anything. my diagnosis was bacterial vaginosis I was also treated with metronidazole. The only solution i came up with is using unlubricated condoms by trojan and taking herbal supplements called milk thistle and olive leaf extract and garlic pills daily.

A reply for dances_with_unicorns....the 2gram dose of metronidazole, taken orally all at once, is indeed the standard for the first treatment of trichamonias. If that doesn't do the trick (no pun intended) then the physician may choose to treat with a larger dose or to extend the treatment over several days.

To the original "asker"----it just may not have worked the first time. Both of you need to be treated again and this time wait until you are tested and have negative results before resuming sexual activity.

Metronidazole is usually given over an extended period of time, like any other antibiotic. I would have some serious doubts as to whether a "one-shot" dose of metronidazole would take care of any problem. In any case, it hasn't worked for YOU, so contact the clinic and let them know you're still experiencing symptoms.

Go back to the doctor again, and if you have it again, you might want to ask your boyfriend about being with someone else and got it and gave it back to you. Sometimes when people cheat, there are ways of finding out, the hard way usually.

I would go back and get a second course. Both you and your boyfriend. You need to make sure before you resume sex you get rechecked to make sure your test is negative on both parts. Otherwise you will reinfect each other. Also make sure you both have HIV tests, since people infected with Trichomonas are at higher risk of contracting it.

Go back to your doctor and get rechecked the both of you. Not just one of you. You will only reinfect each other.

You need to go back to see the doc and your boyfriend needs to see the doc two so you can both get checked. Perhaps his didn't clear up and he re-infected you. See the doc and find out what is going on.
