I believe it's very simple, he is aging. Being very emotional, even overly emtional can be something that effects alot of the elderly. There was obviousy, something specific about the event that triggered his emotions, but the fact that he was not able to manage his emotions in a way he may have preferred, is what I'm referring to. It is not that uncommon.

but then it turned out it wasnt his bodyguard..
