And do you think he was pushed in to retirement?
I personally don't think so, let's not forget he has been a great player for Oz.

big shock!!! i thought he would retire after the ashes series...but i guess he thought since his place is in question...he might aswell go out on his terms rather than being 'kicked' out!!!! but i do think he made the right decision to retire....he is 35 and should give the youngsters a place....i thought since he also plays ODI ...world cup would be the last place!!!! i think when u reach 35 or 36....then its time to retire....u can only harm ur career by getting into bad form and being dropped and having basically no chance to get back into the team at such an age!!!! unless ur shane warne or someone like muralitharan...who are spinners and dont do much apart from bowling!!! especially when they are so bloody good!!!

He has been a great player.
However, all players have to retire incldg. the great players.
He had been in a team whose reserve bench is very very strong and a slip of performance here and there just makes people after you. All the great aussie players like Lillee etc. have been after Aussies labelling them as team of oldies. Martyn attacked him and now when he failed in first two matches, all were after him and hence he had no choice but to retire.

Yes. Martyn is getting old and age does affect your eyesight and reflexes.

Remember he has always been suspect against really good bouncers. In the last year he has been struck on the head a number of times, of which the worst was against SA by Makaya Ntini. All the blows against your head makes you reconsidder your options.

I think it is in his best iunterest to call it a day. Farewell to a good sportsman.

Sort of yes he really didn't look to have the same passion but I wouldn't figure he would do it just days before the Perth Test (I thought he would do a goodbye test)

I hope he fulfils his dreams in life and gets the passion he was famous for back

I do not think that he will either retire or pushed to retire in the near future. Though he is not in good form at present, he is a class player. It will be a matter of time for him to regain his form and serve Australian cricket well in the near future.

well i thought that his time was just about up. after failing again in adelaide, he was pushed, and didnt want to seem to be 'dropped', but a very odd thing to do, retire half-way through a series...
