you can use a crossover cable to connect two computers without using a hub, switch, or existing network. You can purchase a crossover cable from many stores that specialize in computer equipment and cabling.

What you are looking for is an Ethernet Crossover Cable. You should be able to pick one up at your local computer shop. Just make sure you realize that you are looking for a crossover cable, not a standard Ethernet cable (which requires a network device like a router/switch/hub).

There is a special cable which reverses a few of the wires in the cable that allow you to connect two computers and in effect create a "mini-network" between the two systems. It is called a "crossover" cable. You can find them at most computer/electronic stores in the cable section.

get a crossover cable. connect the cable while both pcs are off or restart both when you are done connecting so that their IP addresses are correct. This only applies if you disconnected one from a router or modem first as it will still have the IP address settings from those devices until you reboot.

Hey. You can easly connect to computers to each other using a cat5 cable. If you are file transferring you need to enable file sharing on one of the computer(s). (See http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/winxpnetworking/ht/winxpsfs.htm )
Once that is done with the other computer you need to navigate to \\computernamehere once done loading you should see what ever you enabled to share. You need to click and drag to or from that folder. Have fun!
