Historical census data about 1790-1960 for US by state and race and other criteria: http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/collections/stats/histcensus/

This might be the same data from a the Census Dept: http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/index.htm

Have fun teaching!
