USB plugs and sockets don't have countless lifespans. those metal contacts are truly only the metal leads on a circuit board. After a lot of insertions and removals, the metal on the contacts will finally positioned on out. they could also get dirty. one in each and every of your different respondents stated taking the flash stress aside, and that i agree. be careful. Taking it aside really somewhat skill breaking it aside. Get it right down to the bare little circuit board. once you will discover the contacts on the section that is going into the USB socket on your pc, sparkling them up with a cotton swab and alcohol. Then, as the different guy stated, insert it interior the socket and gently wiggle it round. With luck it will artwork this one very last time. If it does artwork, replica each and each and every of the files OFF OF IT right now, and positioned it on a sparkling flash stress. do not use the former one back. (i have were given a number of SanDisk flash drives. None has failed yet, yet all of them will finally.)

As long as there are no processes running that are reading/writing to the USB disk, there will be no damage done to the disk. XP's USB device stopping function is just to make sure that nothing is reading/writing to the disk.

It could be that some kind of malware is causing this - you can try Trend Micro's online virus scan at [ http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ ]

Another thing that could possibly help would be registry mechanic [ http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/ ] - though I doubt a problem lies in the registry, it's still an extremely useful piece of software to have.

If these things don't work, you may have to just grit your teeth and bear it. As long as there's no activity going on with the disk, no damage will occur. I haven't bothered stopping USB devices in years.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
