A Tamagotchi is a small, handheld toy, which basically consists of taking care of a virtual pet. You are required to feed and play with your pet, clean up after it when it goes to the bathroom, and generally make sure it is happy. If you fail to care for it properly, it will die. Caring for it usually means waking up in the middle of the night to give it food or whatever, as well as taking it everywhere, although some versions now let you pause the game, so your pet won't bother you when you're too busy. They were popular back in the mid 90's, and you can still find them in many stores, if you are so inclined.

Tamagotchi was released on November 23rd, 1996 by Bandai and was finally released in May 1st 1997 for the US. A second released of a Generation 2 was made available about 6 months later.

The Professor built them little egg shaped protection cases so they could survive on earth, then Mikachu painted some, took them to school and started the Tamagotchi craze...
