am setting up a pumping system for direct sea water into and out of the huge tank. Is this okay or do i have to filter the sea water first.

I had a tank set up with pumping fresh seawater from the ocean (The pacific ocean in British Columbia, B.C.) I had a 1 and half inch schedule 40 pipe approx 400 feet past the shoreline to ensure i wasn't pumping any washed up pollutants or effluent. It was pumped directly to my tank with a small filter screen, just to keep the solids and bigger critters out of my tank. The return pipe (the drain) was drained back into the ocean about 100 feet away from the intake. I did not heat or treat the water as I'm keeping the same type of fish found in my native waters in a 1000 gallon coastal reef tank. But if you are going to keep anything other than the native species found in your local waters. I would not suggest you to pump sea-water in your tank, because if you change the temperature or the chemistry of the sea-water, the living organisms in the water will die and pollute your tank.

Wow, you are lucky to live close enough to the ocean to do this. However, the water quality just off the coast might not be as clean as you think. But if it is, and you tested it, then there is no reason to filter it becuase what goes in is just going to come right out.

My advice would be to register to the forums at reefs.org (http://www.reefs.org/phpBB2/) and ask you question again there. Be as specific as you can. There will probably be someone there who has done this kind of project before.
