My friend and I were in the fastlane on the freeway probably going 55 mph. the traffic slowed down to 10-20 mph very abruptly and a collision with the car in front of us almost occurred. Traffic started moving forward again, then she (my friend) began to move forward and we looked at each other with the thought of "WOW, that WAS close" (It was for a split second) Then when we looked back to the road, the car in front of us was now completley stopped and sure enough we hit them. We do not know what happened. We don't know if a collision had already occured and we drove into it.We also don't know if she hit the car and then caused that car to hit the car in front of it and so on until 5 cars became involved. We were in a newer Ford truck (full size)I've been told by a reliable source that a vehicle would have a hard time causing that large of a chain reaction going roughly 30-35 mph...Fortunatley, almost everybody involved seemed OK, and no airbags deployed... This is where I need your advice, My friend did not have her policy renewed since 4-5 months ago. The police officer took her old policy number anyways and let us go. She doesn't know what to do and I don't know what to tell her. She doesn't care about the truck but is scared beyond belief about all the other cars and drivers. Her truck was still able to opperate.I need sound advice to help calm her down, She thinks her life is over... Please, honesty is good but don't try and scare us more unless you know it's the absolute truth. Yes she knows her policy was probably expired but she didn't know it happened 4-5 months ago. I know this girl, she is a good person, The only reason she didn't have insurance is because she has no money, She doesn't drink or smoke and is still barely scraping by paycheck to paycheck, All her money is going to her lawyer expenses from a bad divorce, and all the bills associated with it. This just happened today Does somebody out there know what she might be facing?

In a multi-car pile-up, the guy in front collects from everybody else, the guy in back pays everybody else. And so it goes down the line.

No insurance? Doesn't make much difference, you still owe. In some states you will loose your license, perhaps your car, and then have a judgment against you. The longer the judgment goes unpaid, the bigger it gets with lawyers clapping their hands and adding billings for their time trying to collect. You could do some time.

So if the judgment is for say half a million, and you got to prison, I think prison labor can pay up to a dollar an hour now. Good luck.

Unfortunately this isn't atypical for Allstate. They try their best to get out of paying what they owe. Is your policy with them, or is it the other driver? If it's the other driver and you have a different insurance company, then your agent should be able to help you. If it's your policy, lotsa luck. What kind of excuse do they give for not even paying the bills? You could file a complaint with the state insurance commission. You might have to contact an attorney to get reasonable compensation - unfortunately that will mean that the attorney will get a large cut, but if they're only offering $5K on a claim that's $80K+, it might be worth it - even for Allstate, that's a stretch! I've had two accidents with Allstate-insured drivers, and my son had one, all where their insured was clearly at fault - in one, my car was legally parked at the time it was hit. They played games in all three claims. There are a couple websites with a lot of Allstate horror stories.

The insurance must be updated as required by law. Thus, if any damages will be filed against her, she had to pay direct from her pocket and it will be costly unlike when there is insurance when the damages could be paid by the insurance companies.

she is only responsible for the damage that she caused. have her call the person that she hit..she will be responsible for thier car...if someone else hit you then they are responsible for yours...regardless of who originally caused the accident. tell the person she hit that she will pay for the damages out of pocket and to not contact the insurance company. most people will be ok with that. My ex had no liscence or insurance and used to get into accidents all the time. since he knew people that worked in body shops, he would get thier cars fixed for them and he never got into trouble. just contact the person directly before they try to contact your insurance, or she may find herself with a lawsuit.

my god what's wrong with you people and driving without insurance?

tell your friend that she's in for a long insurance claim.
she's also jeopardized herself for any future insurance covergage beause she was driving without insurance coverage

the officer shouldn't have taken the old policy number and that can be counted as fraud against your friend

if she can't afford isnurance, she surely cant afford to own a car.
