I suggest the Britax, it's a great buy for the money and can hold a child up to 65 pounds in a harness buckle which is so much safer. It can be installed rear facing until your baby is one years old and then can be turned around. We bought one and have used it for all 3 of our daughters, our youngest is 21 months and is in it facing forward now. We have just updated the material by purchasing new seat covers each time we've had a baby. This also makes it very easy to wash!

You can buy this seat in different patterns as well but we've found that this was the best buy for the money and the fact that it has lasted so long makes us even happier.

We bought an Evenflo Triumph for my children (it's #1 safety rated on Consumer Reports for cars without LATCH). You can safely rearface up to 30 pounds. HOWEVER, it only goes to 40 pounds forward facing. If I were to start over again, I would invest in a Britax (Marathon, Decathalon, Boulevard) simply because they have a 5 pt harness that goes to 65 pounds fwd facing. For my older child, we're using a Britax Regent, and that goes up to 80 pounds in a 5 pt harness, fwd facing. The sites in my sources will give you MUCH more information.
IMO, the Britax carseats are worth the extra money. Yes, they all meet the same bare minimum of car seat safety recommendations, but the Britax offers more (one of their seats even offers side impact protection).
ETA: If you do some research on the net, you'll be able to find warehouse discount sales on pretty much any carseat.

When you buy a $200-$300 car seat like Britax Or Radian you are not just paying for a name. The quality is very obviously better. i was looking at them at Target th other day and wishing I could spend $265.00 on a Britax Regent so my Son could be in a harness up to 65 pounds. The strap material is so much sturdier, they have more EPS foam and a host of other features that insure more comfort and safety. They also rear-face until 35 pounds, which is so much safer for their spine. We have a Graco Comfort Sport that will rear face until 30 pounds. My 22 month-old 25# son still rear faces for safety.

i have 4 car seats in my MPV minivan!

i have the alpha omega elite, and i love it. my son had used it since he outgrew his infant seat, rear-facing and now forward-facing. the seat will convert to a booster seat, and can accommodate children up to 100 lbs (not that you need it then). it can also be used as an infant seat when fully reclined, but you are past that. also, it is a 5-point harness, comes with the latch system (most do these days), super easy to install and remove, and very comfortable for my son. the one i have is dark grey, it hides stains remarkably, and washes up really well. it is a little bulkier than some (although not much heavier), but i feel it is safer, and there is plenty of room in the back seat so that is not a concern for me.

Saftey First & Cosco as well as Eddie Bauer car seats are all made by Cosco inc. I like the Evenflo Triumph, it is the eastest to use, a bit heavy though

I have been installing car seats for about 5 years now as a AAA certified installer. I have been a police officer for over 7 Years. This may sound like a cop out.. no pun intended but here goes. All seats on the market have to meet the same federal safety standards. You need to find the one that fits easily and snuggly in your vehicle. You need to find the one that you are comfortable using. You need to find the one that you will install correctly each and every time you put that child inside it. Brand names dont mean squat in this area. Britax for example make nice seats for about 200-300 dollars but you are payin for a name.. i hope this helps..
