You are right, but I assure you that those who are profitting from the 400 billion already spent on this war do not feel it is a waste of taxpayers money. They don't care how long it takes, for they sell weapons to both sides. The same is true for the war on drugs. Who got the dope out of southeast Asia, and who is selling the poppies out of Afghanistan? The war keeps the prices up, just as it has for oil. The longer it goes on, more money they make. Then, when it is finally over, they get to sell more weapons, etc., to both sides as they had to use up the ones they bought from you before to prosecute the long war. They think these are boom times and celebrate this policy as good for business!

The government will never win any kind of war on drugs. They should all be legalized and we should be putting money into the treatment of people who are addicted as opposed to throwing nonviolent drug offenders in jail. Its ridiculous.

First, you should read the short history of the marijuana laws to understand how it all got started. See http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm

The marijuana laws were the product of racism, ignorance, and nonsense.

Then you should read the major studies of the subject at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm They all concluded that the marijuana laws do more harm than good.

Then you should take a look at the government's own financial analysis of the legalization of drugs. They concluded that legalizing drugs would save at least 37 billion dollars per year. See http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/savings.htm

Legalising Pot is logical but there is no political support for it because of America's love affair with Puritanism.
