...is it learned? Remember, animals for the most part do not seek revenge and neither do very young human babies. If you think it is learned then why is it so prevalent in American society, 70 to 80 percent of whom believe in God?

For "The_edata": The second half of the qquestion was supposed to explain why learning in America should result in less revenge. If so many believe in God and God in all major religions is a forgiving god,who expects his subjects to forgive then it should be that revenge is not taught.

This for "KSwill"; You don't see animals engaging in war except for chimps. The lash out in anger when attacked or in mating brawls but don't carry a grudge. I'm an old farm boy so I have seen a lot of animals.

i think every living thing has the capability of acting on revenge because of instinct. if someone hits you twice in the arm the third time he tries you won't let him.
and my second answer for ya, i'm not christian anymore but have you ever heard the saying an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. that came directly from the bible. but then again the bible contradicts itself by many times in its writings. so what do you expect?

There is a problematic assumption in your question:

That something being "learned" somehow makes it less likely to be "prevalent" in society. What does the age at which the behavior is aquired matter? If it arrives during a prenatal state or at three years old, if we all have it, it is prevalent regardless.

To some it might seem crazy, but I'll tell you what I believe.....
I believe that the devil works on us in ways that most ppl would find unbelieveable. The Christians are under a constant strain from evil. He uses our emotions and feeds on them, using our thoughts and weaknesses against us.
I'm not saying this as an excuse for the killers and other monsters that have and are living today....but all he needs is the opportunity....and you're just as doomed as he is ig you don't fight him.
God says that vengeance is HIS for a reason. If we go around hurting and killing ppl, then we won't be any better than the devil himself.

Revenge is a symptom of anger. Animals don't act out of anger their actions are based on, fear, prey drive, instinct. Apes are the exception I have read that they feel the primitive emotion of anger so I would conclude that they also feel revenge.

Animals don't have to seek revenge, they kill mercilessly without conscience.
