Well a Rock lobster is a type of lobster. There are other types of lobster like a Maine lobster - which is found, obviously, on the shores of Maine. The main(e), excuse the pun, difference between a Maine and a Rock Lobster is the size and the kind of meat. The meat in a Maine is more sweet and tender, while the meat of a Rock is more meaty and less sweet. Rock lobsters are usually bigger too. If you would like to try some, go to a Red Lobster in your neighborhood. We've got both Maine and Rock lobster tails and during some promotions we even have both on one meal.

Several different groups of crustaceans are known as lobsters, although the clawed lobsters (such as the genus Homarus) are most often associated with the name. Clawed lobsters are not closely related with spiny lobsters or slipper lobsters, which have no claws (chelae), or squat lobsters. The closest relatives of clawed lobsters are the reef lobster Enoplometopus and the three families of freshwater crayfish.
The rock lobster or spiny rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii, (often called simply "crayfish") is a species of spiny lobster found throughout coastal waters of southern Australia, and New Zealand including the Chatham Islands. The commercial rock lobster fishery is New Zealand's third biggest seafood export earner. Spiny rock lobsters are carnivorous and live in and around reefs in depths ranging from 5 to 275 metres. They are dark red and orange above with paler yellowish abdomens.
