I saw a show on HGTV about someone who painted their kitchen countertops with melamine paint. I don't know where to find this paint but it looked great when they did it. Try a Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint store. Don't use the wall paint though it is not tough enough. If it was me and I couldn't find the melamine paint I might try using an oil based paint and then cover it with a good oil based urethane. It would be like what you would put on the floor and if it gets wet it shouldn't hurt it. If you do this I would prime it first with a product called BIN that you can also find in one of those stores. (Use the shellac based kind.) This would still be alot cheaper than replacing the countertop. I don't know how much the melamine paint would cost but if you go with priming painting and urethaning you could just buy a quart of each of these and probably the cost (including a brush and roller) would be around 40.00 for everything. The kicker is though if it dosen't work and starts to peel you are out the $40.00. You could do the same with the shelving but make sure you use the BIN primer. It works better than anything else and it won't come off. EDIT: To Katryna C. where do you find the melamine paint? I looked for it once after seeing it on that show and no one knew what I was talking about. If you answer I know we will all be grateful.

go to DIY.net or HGTV.com and look it up. You may have to lightly sand and repaint the area. Ask your local hardware store.
Good luck.
