You cab also buy any number of guitar processors that are usb compliant like the Line 6 Pod or some of the Digtech processors. They emulate different amp and cabinet models with effects so if you need a blackface twin on one song and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier with a Marshall cabinet on another you just twist up the knobs and go.

The Apple website has a great free tutorial on exactly how to do this. You can get a 1/4 - 1/8 adapter and run your guitar chord directly into the microphone plug on the Mac, but that's less than Ideal. The best way is to get a FireWire mixer from a music store or website that converts a signal from your guitar or amp output to digital input, then you can record directly into GarageBand. I've tried it and it works great.

apple make a cord especially for garage band - 1/4'' to1/8'' works fine.
