As soon as I saw the question "most stressful jobs", I automatically thought of air traffic controller. I think that's # 1. Here are some others: Law enforcement, Firefighters, Social worker, Teacher, Stockbroker, Surgeon, Taxi Driver.

According to the FAA in 1980, being a controller was no more stressful than driving a bus. This is what Longhorn Bond, adminisrator of the FAA in 1980, said to the public. Back in the late 70's early 80's a controller sat at the top of my list. Today perhaps number 5 or 6.

Let's not forget about those poor souls at the fast food joints. I remember working at McDonald's back in the day. It was my first job. People are so mean to the fast food workers, the cashiers, the custodians. We've all been there, so you'd think that people would be nicer but no. Those poor kids go to work to try and earn some cash, and get treated like crap. It can be hard work too! Think about that next time you throw the burger in the face of a 16yr old clerk trying to juggle the confusion of being teenager, school, friends, AND a crappy minimum wage job.

If I get some time off between the 2 less stressful jobs then I think it'd be better than one hard stressful job, at least you get to change scenes :D

Hi! Thanks for the question.

Since this is a subjective question, it would be good to cite
different surveys as regards the topic. The following links provide
such lists and even though there are some varieties, professions like
police, teachers and customer service reps are almost always included
in the most stressful list.

I don't think teaching is. Shorter workdays, summers off.

Lawyers... people's freedom is on the line
Doctors.... people's lives are on the line
Soldiers.... put their own life on the line so you may live yours...
Police..... keep order in this insane world of ours
Firefighters....deal with hazardous material and fires
President... has to deal with the entire nation while facing hatred
Judge... has the life and freedom of a person in their hands

Air Traffic Controller is indeed a stressful one, people's lives are on the line... but perhaps not as many as with doctors and soldiers. Maybe I'm biased because I refuse to fly

Firefighting. Try crawling in zero visibility smoke on your belly where it is only 200 degrees and 2 feet above your head it's 900+ degrees. Meanwhile, you're trying to find a screaming child. If you screw up the child dies, your crew dies, and you die. Not to mention the CPR's on Christmas day, mangled teenagers from DUI accidents, the most horrible industrial accidents you could think of, very little sleep during a 24 hour shift and then coming home to raise our kids while our wives go to work, a 62% greater chance than the rest of society of dying from cancer and heart attacks, and city councils who constantly try to cut our wages and benefits. No other job even comes close.

I dont know, but I can tell you a very unpleasant job.... working for a credit card call center, being screamed at and cursed at just because people dont want to take the blame for messing up their own accounts! I hear more profanity at my job, than I have heard in years outside the job.

I would think a first year investment banker is up there. They often work 100+ hours a week.

As for ATC, I guess it depends. Some stress may be caused by knowing what is at stake for your decisions. But its good working conditions.
