Is it safe to dye my hair while pregnant?
There are conflicting reports about the safety of hair dye during pregnancy: Several studies found no ill effects on pregnant rodents given 100 times the typical human dose of these products, whereas British researchers reported chromosome damage among women who dyed their hair. Although this study was not conducted on pregnant women, this finding suggests that there may be some risk to coloring your hair while pregnant.
As a precaution, some physicians advise you to avoid hair color until after your first trimester (the period when your baby's vital organs, head, body and limbs form). Colorants made from vegetable dyes such as henna are preferable to the chemical dyes used in permanent and semi-permanent formulas. Recent studies indicate that hair dyes contain relatively high levels of bio-available lead acetate that can be harmful to the fetus, particularly the nervous system and brain. Check the product label and avoid lead based hair products.

Q: Can I dye my hair if I'm pregnant?
A: Many moms-to-be give their colorist a holiday, but Dr. Robert Hartman, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Lake Forest Hospital, Chicago says there is no danger coloring while pregnant. “It's an urban legend that chemically treating hair during pregnancy is unsafe,” he says. “Most of the restrictions and prohibitions for hair treatments come from years ago when harsh chemicals and peroxides were used.”
Still, pregnancy does change the texture, condition and growth cycle of your hair. To reduce the risk of renegade hormones spoiling a color, some salons won't color hair until after the first trimester. If you're concerned about chemicals penetrating the shaft, Dr. Hartman says waiting until mid-pregnancy should set your mind at ease. – Julia Rosien

Some will say yes and some will say no. My first pregnancy I had roots from hell because I was terrified something would happen. This pregnancy, I just had my hair colored back to the natural color to get rid of my highlights. Plenty of my friends have done it and had perfect healthy babies. One of my friends is even a cosmotologist and she deals with hair dye everyday. She said that the only concern for coloring your hair while pregnant is the chance the color may not take or it will cause your hair to fall out in spots.

i personally wouldn't take the risk. in example, they say having a little chocolate is okay, but caffeine in general is bad for a baby-- why take the risk? I hate to say it to the other answerer, but there is no evidence that it really causes mental retardation. I attached a link below that says you can do it from the justmommies site, but I wouldn't risk it anyways. The experts say wait until after the first trimester at least.

My doctors have always said no. Just make sure you are in a well ventilated area. I would even suggest using a fan to keep the fumes to a minimum.

I did full head of highlights and my son is smart as a whip. The only thing I asked my colorist to do was not to let the dye touch my scalp. :)

if you have doubts, there are ways to get around it. i believe there are more safer colouring these days as Ive always thought it was dangerous until someone told me that there was a more safer product to use. i still have doubts though and funny thing, she didn't tell me what it was called so the doubt is still there.
