except Jacques Kallis and Andrew Flintoff,
noone qualifies as all rounders in world cricket now, if you have to go by
the saying, the all-rounder should have the talent where he can be selected for
his batting or bowling.

But we have so many who tries to make the grade like Vettori,Razzaq,Watson,Symonds,
Blignaut, Shoaib Malik.

And India in its ranks has JP Yadav, Sanjay Bangar, Praveen Kumar(UP), Rajat Bhatia(Delhi), Yusuf Pathan (Baroda),etc and Robin Singh, Diwakar Vasu, etc in the past.

I believe it is the reluctance to play them in the tests. for some reason, in India if
someone can bat and bowl they are confined only to ODIs. Any thoughts.

It is a good question.
You are right, BCCI is afraid to play an alrounder dreading failure. Greg has taken the inititive to continue with Pathan and see the results. Now it is the BCCI who has to groom and develop him as a force to reckon with. He should be given a long stint even if he fails. He is a genuine alrounder and should be given sufficient time. I am very pleased with his approach in the practice match and the batting talent he has shown by chipping in a century. When the class players were looking novoices he single handedly helped India reach a respectable score.
India should reserve one spot for an alrounder in test cricket as well as ODI.
I also feel the talent of Piyush Chawla should also be groomed and he should be developed into a good alrounder. He is still young and has the flare to excel.

I once again appreciate your question and observation.

JP Yadav got some chances in ODIs and could not do much ...

Sanjay Bangar also was like JP Yadav ...

playing as all-rounders in tests require lot more stamina, particularly for bowling long spells on hot humid days on difficult pitches against strong batting line-ups (unlike in ODIs where you don't have to bowl more than 10 overs) - ask Irfan Pathan (or Flintoff) !

Sanjay Bangar and J.P. Yadav were tried earlier, but not proved successful. I strongly feel that Irfan Pathan will emerge as an allrounder in tests as well as One Day series in the near future.
Another future prospect is the youngster Piyush Chawla. He should be groomed as an allrounder.

To play test cricket guys have to be extremely good in both batting and bowling. There technique should also be very good. Now in India we dont have a potential all rounder who can play test cricket. Pathan can be rated as
as an all rounder. But he has to prove it in abroad.

Thats because,The two of the all rounders you mention have better pace or should i say genuine pace compare to others(As round the world where cricket is played, have pace friendly pitches), and hence they have more success with bowling to go along with their batting. The rest allrounders just don't have enough what it takes to be wicket-takers in Test matches(main factor consistency)

As mention earlier, you should have pace or swing(with a bit of pace) in your bowling to go along with batting to be successful all rounders but India is already finding hard to find a pure bowler with genuine pace, what are the chances we will find an all rounder with that stuff require to be successful in test. Kapil Dev had those quality thats why he was such a successful all rounder for India.

This is the main reason why all rounders you mention don't get chance in Test matches.
The prime factor for all these Indian failure to produce all rounder is India don't produce pace friendly pitches at domestic level, hence we lack in pace power compare to other countries

Spin is not the key, thats why you will never find an good all rounder who bats and bowl spin. One needs pace bowling

When they produce better pitches conducive to assisting their fast bowlers. Then it will always hinder their progress producing very good all rounders and bowlers.
