Actually, ND is one of the most popular teams in college football, kind of like the Patriots or Cowboys in the NFL. Alot of people hat these teams, but that is because more people like them. ND also gets preferential treatment and by the way it WAS the capital back in the day.

I don't know about hate but a lot of people consider them the most overrated team ever. ND can go 6-6 and still be ranked in the top ten the next year's pre-season poll. I respect the history of the program, but I think you might get an argument about ND being the capital of football. I think the reluctance to join a conference and play a REAL schedule and drop the 3 service academies might go a long way. I don't know why you would think it is justified to hate on USC, I can sorta understand the U with the discipline problems there, but USC is relatively respected. Another problem many people with is the over hype of players from ND, Brady Quinn is no where near the best player in college football. He folds in every big game against a quality opponent. Notre Dame's record against ranked opponents is not exactly stellar either, easy to beat service academies, not so easy against USC. I am Razorback fan I will honestly say I was hoping to play Notre Dame in a bowl. Quinn third in the Heisman race, McFadden second, Smith-winner. McFadden will be the front runner unless some over-hyped ND player that the press has fallen love with comes along

I just finished reading a book about college football and television (1951-2004). The Irish were popular before becuase they would always win, the would always be on the radio, and were in many movies or newspaper articles, and america had a large irish population. Since television, the irish have only become more popular becase people will tune in to watch ND play, making notre dame make more money than the other universities.
Also, people ND becuase they get preferential treatment becuase of the history and becuase of the large tv audience (which influences the network and the bowls who want sellouts).

I don't think everyone hates Notre Dame. I just think that football fans everywhere have their favorite team (like you and Notre Dame) and tend to find reasons to dislike any other teams. What is wrong with USC in your book? Like Notre Dame, they also have a storied college football history. Do they deserve to be "hated", or is it just fans rooting for their favorite teams?

No one college is the "Capital of College Football" And my ex boyfriend who is a ND grad believes it's because ND is in the Independent conference, has a contract with NBC, it's own special section with MSNBC, A Premium cable channel that shows all sorts of ND stuff around the clock. In other words over exposure.

No one is jealous of Notre Dame history, it's just that they are somewhat undeserving. They aren't as great as they are hyped to be and yet they always get a bowl bid. They have a huge fan base and thats usually the reason why. Their quarterback is so hyped but just like the team he's not all that fantastic. I think people are just sick of hearing how great they are, because really they aren't.

They are a team based on reputation of their dynasty years (propelled by the media and movies like "Rudy"). That is annoying to some people. But what is INSULTING to people is the way Notre Dame is "too good" to join afreakin conference that the rest of us.

simple man. everyone hates notre dame simply because everyone loves notre dame. who wouldn't want to cheer for them, and that's just why we all hate them. the fact that they hardly ever have a very tough schedule yet usually play in a much bigger bowl game than they deserve to be in (cuz of the national following, blah, blah, blah) doesn't really help their case either.

I wouldn't call it hate, but they are overhyped. The media acts as if it is Notre Dames birthright to be number one, and I think people get tired of that. Still there is a mystique to them very few universities have.
