The Yearling, Fodderwing -> Flag?

Question

Ok, in the book, "The Yearling"... Jody asks Fodderwing to name his deer. Fodderwing comes up with "Flag" before he dies...
why did he choose Flag?

read the book too many years ago to remember the incident, but deer have white on the underside of their tales. when they run the white shows as their tales are up. their tales in that position are refered to as flags.
