If you're talking about recurring dreams, absolutely. I went into this in GREAT depth last month, & the asker gave me best answer with comment "A bit of reasoning plus some common sense." If it's still hanging around in cyberspace, it was in the psychology catergory, asked by durak28. Very lengthy answer! I think you can search the question: "Anyone have a good analysis for my recurring dream?" #1. I'd suggest you NEVER refer to books or websites to interpret your dream; only YOU can do that; the same symbols don't apply to everyone, they are intriguingly subjective. #2. I've had various recurring dreams over many, many years. Each has a "pattern" of its own, & together--they all form a pattern of the inner "me." #3. If you truly care about the "messages" in your dreams, you might keep a dream journal, & over time, you'll discover what they were "telling" you. #4. Recurring dreams "alter" in phases that you can understand in retrospect, since they are not literal, they are metaphorical. A very mundane example, is one I had in which there was a great deal of fear; at some point, I made a choice in my dream not to "go there" & this was at a time when my subconscious was telling me I had alternatives. I've never had that dream since. As I've said, if you really are curious enough, when you wake, have a tape recorder & record the dream without opening your eyes. Don't intellectualize it, or put things in it that weren't there, & don't leave anything out. Your dream memories will improve even to the point that you can control what you want to dream. HONEST. If you start a typed dream journal, it's best to do so in the present tense--keeps you closer in touch. (Wow, I don't stop, do I?) Often, friends ask me the meaning of their dream/s. I just ask them--their emotions in the dream, was anyone else present, STUFF, & it's amazing how they can then understand by THEMSELVES. I really hope you look up that question! I honestly think it will help a lot. If you want, you can IM me & I promise I won't go on a diatribe! (By the way, I love your avatar.) & Merry Christmas to you, too!
Edit: So MANY fascinating answers. I wish I could listen to everyone & hopefully (as I've done for decades) provide some insight. The flying dream is especially interesting. Mine went through phases of first being awed that I was able, then afraid I'd fall, then very pompous when those who couldn't, were awed by me! & finally, just the pleasure of it. Yet, "flying" means different things to different people...depends...

Yes, I have the same type of dreams over and over. I have even had dreams that were like a mini-series. They would end and the next night pick back up where they left off and continue on--that went on for days LOL
The type of reoccurring dreams that I normally have are I am in a large house and each time I open a door there is another room. And then another room off that room, and so forth. Some of the rooms are all strange shapes and angles--like it is an attic room. The rooms have a collection of old stuff, that is kind of cool like an old dusty chair, a lamp, a trunk...things not worth a lot of money, but cool none the less.
I think your dream may represent that when times are tough, and you feel like you are drowning, you can still breathe. No matter what bad thing happens to you, you are a survivor and you will make it through.

There is a dream book out there that lists all sorts of objects, themes, and other things one could possibly dream about and gives each one a specific meaning. Some of them are very interesting. Do a search for "dream book" and see what happens. Breathing underwater might mean you have an innate fear of drowning, or something completely opposite. Who's to say. Get your hands on that book and see for yourself. of course, somebody probably just made all the stuff in it up, so don't go living your life by the meanings that book has.

Fireater, first of all Merry Christmas to you, too.
Now, yes, I have has a few dreams that have repeated themselves for several years.
But I also have had dreams of a person or a member of the person's family that has died, and within a short period, the person or family member dies. I don't like these kind of dreams, but I can't stop them.

well i get strange dreams too, i find it very strange. just last night i had one i was standing in my front yard and i saw dogs running down the street, but they were running on air. freaky in a way... usually this could mean that you have a problem with what is represnted in your dream, this problem can be bad or good, as a fear or a want in a way. don't think you are crazy at all everyone gets this. so yeah just think about the dream and whats in it are you afraid of it or not? and that should get you a step or too closer to your answer this is the best i can do

I used to have a reaccuring dream when I was a kid that I would get in my moms car drive down the block and crash into the same freakin building every time. Not sure what it could mean though water probably has something to do with feeling peaceful and being able to breathe in it... maybe that means you're gonna become a fish. hehe.

I almost always dream about work, or my parents. Once I dreamed I was at my mother's funeral (she's been gone since 1975) and instead of her body in the casket, it was a huge loaf of bread, shaped like her! It's usually something frustrating with me. We'll be hoping that yours doesn't mean you're going to grow gills, or *need* to breathe underwater!

That's a cool theme--a positive one, like a super-power or something. I have a lot of things that repeat themselves, but they're usually negative. For instance, I have asthma, and I dream I'm suffocating a lot. Or I dream I'm trying to scream, but can't, or that I'm trying to call someone on my cell phone, but can't get through to them.
Your theme sounds like a powerful one. Water is usually considered to symbolize the unconscious. The fact that you can breathe within your unconscious is good: you're not overwhelmed (drowned) by it. So you're probably not someone who struggles with denial or hidden pain and fear.

I have had a lot of dreams where I was flying and I always felt free. I'd love to be able to breathe underwater. I don't know what it means, but it sounds fun. Maybe it means you should go scuba diving :)
