Your federal tax dollars are NOT paying for that. State sales tax for state inmates, maybe, but not federal.
And if you want to stop supporting millions of first-time offenders doing 20 years for one joint, stop listening to the politicians who promise you they'll "get tough on crime" if you elect them. The politician wants the office so he can pocket or waste more of your money. You listened to him, you elected him, now you pay for all those "great ideas" he promised.
No one wants the Charles Mansons running around, but there are a lot of little guys caught up in mandatory minimums. You're also supporting a lot of elderly prisoners with medical problems that cost you four times as much as a regular inmate, because they can't get paroled.
My husband has been in federal prison for 26 years. Since the parole board refuses to release him, the tax payers have indeed supported his basic needs. Years ago, they also paid for knee and shoulder surgery at a medical facility. But getting a tat removed? Forget it.
Like at most FCCs, they have one doctor for 2000 inmates at his facility, and getting meds or basic treatment just doesn't happen.
As I've harped repeatedly in these legal forums, I know of a young first time offender, trying to be cool around his friends, who got a 3-year drug charge. First week inside, he was gang-raped, and died from his injuries due to lack of medical care. He got a 3-year sentence, not a death sentence with his rectum ripped open. I know of an elderly diabetic that died in his wheelchair outside the med unit, despite other inmates frantically trying to get attention for him.
So whoever these wannabee-ganster street trash bitches are getting the medical attention, it isn't in federal. The ones I know in state can't even get a tampon without filling out a form---who do you know getting them removed???????
