In the end, it was his choice. By the time of his retirement, the team had started a downhill slide. Having made his mark in the NFL he decided it was time to retire. With his physical problems, most of which were due to age, he couldn't perform at the highest level unless he was surrounded by top notch players. Since the offensive line couldn't seem to protect him, he didn't stand much of a chance. I think he made the right decision.

I dont think he was forced technically, but it would have been really stupid for him to continue.

I mean just picture being Troy Aikman. You have won 3 superbowls, you led one of the best teams in history, you are a good looking well spoken guy who has a great career in broadcasting ahead of you. Why jepodize yourself and get another serious concussion which could really damage your future. He left at the right time, as things were only going to get worse for him.

aikman wanted to try to keep playing but jerry jones kind of forced his hand, which actually wasn't such a bad thing considering the severe concussions the guy sustained. after it became clear that dallas wasn't going to have him play for them, aikman came close to joining the chargers or dolphins but neither one panned out.

ultimately i feel he was kinda forced out but it wasn't due to personal issues or diminished skills-he was still relatively young. out of respect for him teams stayed away because one more blow to the head had serious potential to do considerable damage or kill the poor guy.

even though dallas had the best offensive line ever during most of his tenure aikman's tendency to wait until the last second to pass caused a ton of hits. this was before the nfl enacted the current rules where basically if you touch the qb's little finger you'll get a personal foul and a big fine. and defensive players of course wanted to cripple the pretty boy leader of the best team that everyone loves to hate. it took a heavy toll.

what these people are trying to say is that due to the multiple concussions that troy aikman suffered early and often in his career, he really couldn't chance any more head injuries and decided to call it quits at a relatively early point in his career

He actually retired due to his back injuries, not the concussions. And Jerry Jones didn't force his hand on Aikman, wtf?
So yes it was his decision.
