In reality, a lot could happen... or very little. There are a lot of good answers here, especially those with web citations.

1) Get a pregnancy test and do it ASAP.
2) If it is positive, see your doctor ASAP.
3) If it is negative, but you're missing your period, see your doctor.
4) If you don't trust the first test, do another one!

Now, about what the pill could do if you are pregnant... Scary as it sounds, yes, it could cause an abortion. RU486 (the "morning after pill") is a variation of the "regular" birth control pill. Taking the regular pill can cause a pregnancy to abort.

It could also cause birth defects or prenancy complications.

However, a year after I was out of high school (we're talkin' 1989 here, 'kay?), another girl in my school, who was a senior, got pregnant. She was involved in all sorts of activities, sports, cheerleading, you name it. And she was on the pill. She didn't know she was pregnant -- she just kept gaining weight. She even started dieting. She was still getting her periods! Finally, she went to the doctor about the weight gain and he told her she was expecting. She was five and a half months along when she stopped taking the birth control pills. Her baby is FINE (and is a teenager now herself).

Keep in mind, I'm a mom of a 12-year old and an elementary schooler. So this is typical "mom advice" (and Catholic, too!):

A very simple way to avoid going through this type of situation, though, is to not have sex until you're definately sure you're ready to have children.

I hope all goes well with your situation right now.

If you suspect you are pregnant the first thing I recommend is to get it confirmed by your doctor with a blood test. This way you know for sure and can then decide what your next steps will be.

As for birth control and its effects on early pregnancy, my understanding is that as long as you stop taking them within a certain time frame, the risks associated with your pregnancy are minimal if any. If you become pregnant while on The Pill, there is probably no risk of birth defects.

The following information was taken from the weblink below.

I didn’t know that I was pregnant and continued taking my pills. Will the hormones hurt my baby?

Although there is no conclusive evidence that a brief exposure to the artificial hormones contained in hormonal birth controls will cause harm to an unborn child, it is generally advised that you stop using this type of birth control if a pregnancy is suspected. Been there, done that. When I suspected, I got a test and confirmed my biggest surprise. I stopped taking my pill and the baby turned out just fine.

I would get a pregnancy test ASAP.

well keep taking it until you find out definitely because if you take it and aren't pregnant then you pur yourself at risk of getting pregnant it won't hurt unless you continue after finding out. i had a friend who drank heavily then found out she was pregnant and when she found out she was pregnant she was really worried but the doctors assured her that there wasn't enough time to do any damage. just take a test to see if you are pregnant then if you are stop taking the pills

The baby can have a birth defect. The best thing to do if you really dont want to have it, is to do an abortion.
