The Ashes is a Test cricket series played between England and Australia. It is the oldest and most celebrated rivalry of International cricket dating Back to 1882.
The series is named after a satirical obtiuary published in the Sporting Times in 1882 following the match at the Oval, in which Australia beat England for the first time. The obtiuary stated that English Cricket had died and the body will be creamated and the ashes taken to Australia.
The English media dubbed the next English tour to Australia in 1882-83 as the quest to regain the Ashes.
A small terracotta urn was presented to the England Captain Ivo Bligh by a group of Melbourne women at some point during the 1882-83 tour. The contents of the urn are reputed to be the ashes of an item of cricket equipment possible a bail, ball or a stump.

well I'm from Australia and about 50 years ago England were the kings of cricket and no one could beat them until Australia came over to England and played them and Australia won England cricket fans couldn't believe there were news paper articles and everything tell readers how England had lost so someone kept the the ashes of the stumps of the game (well that's what they claim) and now they have made it into a trophy
