More than a hundred years ago, Max Weber wrote "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism." In that classic work, he makes an argument that Western Europe's switch from mercantilism to capitalism was promoted by a change from the "other-worldliness" of Catholicism to the "this-worldliness" of Protestanism.

The study is still controversial, but it demonstrates how a change in one social institution (religion) can bring about a change in another institution (economy).l
