Absolutely, they will have no right to criticize the Yankees for their high payroll any longer. First, the Yankees dump Sheffield and his $13 million salary, then trade Jaret Wright and his bad contract. While other teams have been spending ridiculous amounts, the Yankees have been quiet and not done anything stupid, like say, paying J.D. Drew $70 million.

I think people are not beginning to realize that it's Boston, not the Yankees who are the real "Evil Empire". Every move Boston has made over the last year has been aimed at outdoing the Yankees, and they have made some awful moves; trading Arroyo, Cla Meredith, Hanley Ramirez ( who is going to be a star), Annibal Sanchez, not getting Abreu.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have some huge contracts expiring each of the next three years, Johnson, Abreu, and Giambi. The payrolls are getting closer!! It will be interesting to see if Boston fans realize now that their team is guilty of overspending now, and that they will have no right to run their mouths over that issue any more. Also it's funny that Lucchino and his golden boy, Little Theo don't get along any more. That's why this teams makes so many decisions that go in different directions.

Fenway Park has been sold out for every game since 2002. Everyone in New England watches NESN when the Red Sox play. If John Henry wants to plow everything back into the team salaries, great as far as the fans are concerned. George Steinbrenner has been doing that for 35 years. Come to think of it the NY GM is even named Cashman. But seriously, there are only two ways to compete, draft and nuture, the way the Marlins did for 1997 and 2003, or buy the best players money can buy, as the Yankees have done, more or less consistently, except when they were a subsidiary of CBS, since 1919. So what should the Red Sox do? If they can afford to buy a top team and their owner is willing to, why not get the best players on the market?
Red Sox fans can still criticize the Yankees and their fans in a way reserved only for them. No one spits on Devil Ray fans in Kenmore Square. Think of it as a badge of honor. And accept this salute with the spirit intended, Yankees Suck.

BTW, if the Red Sox don't sign Matsuzaka, they get all their money back and no one, especially the Yankees, is allowed to sign him until the 2009 season. I am not a poker player, but it could just be a bluff since superagent Scott Boras represents Matsuzaka and the guy wants a six year $100 million plus deal and the Red Sox aren't buying.

Well just remember this, The Yankees still have the highest payroll in baseball. That being said the Red Sux and Cubs have definitely raised the bar up a notch this year with the free spending they are doing. I'm glad to finally see that Brian Cashman is showing a little restraint in his dealings at the Winter Meetings and with the Free Agent market this year. The Red Sox may not sign Matsuzaka. It may have been a ploy to block other teams from getting him. The other players that they have signed are not going to get them over the top. It still remains to be seen that Manny will stay with the team. If he goes they're in a world of poop. Its a lot of money for Lugo and JD Drew but it's good to be an average free agent baseball player in 2006.

No Red Sux fans have no right to talk about the Yankees but of course that won't stop them...they are a little slow as you know. If it makes them happy to yap about he Yankees payroll well then let them. They need something to be happy about. We all know that they didn't even make it to the playoffs ...lol. I enjoyed that myself.

I guess the stupidest thing I have seen them do so far is the 70 mil for JD Drew. What he hell, the JD that should have got it was Johnny Damon but NOooooooooooo, he wasn't worth it. Oh well, you can't expect much from a team who has a general manager who still has to deal with acne- Theo Epstein.

GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metatron: I proceeded to read your answer because I was curious what a numskull like you had to say about this topic. First to answer the question, yes and they never had the right in the first place because they were always right behind the Yankees in salary. Back to you, I read your little rant, of course giving you a handicap because of your mental retardation. Pretty basic ignorant stuff which I, myself, have learned to ignore; you don't start a fight with a mentally retarded child if he mutters a curse word without knowledge as to the meaning of it. But then you proceeded to insult New York City, the greatest city in the world. That disgusts me and you are way over the line and no retardation is excusable for what you said. Everything about New York is better than Boston: sports, food (pizza in particular), police department, buildings, and above all: the people. So you may live in your sheltered world but try going outside sometime or go to school because obviously you have the mind capacity of a rodent.

If they don't sign a contract with the Japanese player that they paid $51million just for negotiation rights, then yes, they lose the right to claim the Yanks are buying the pennant, and Theo Epstein needs to leave baseball for good this time!

I am a Red Sox fan. I grew up with and still communicate with a respectable number of Red Sox fans. On the other hand, the Red Sox are far too awesome for me to know all of them. So, I cannot really be expected to speak for all of us.
However, I do believe that you get what you pay for. In baseball in particular, extraordinary players come at extraordinary prices. While that maxim ("maxim" is a word akin to "rule"... since you seem like a Yankee fan, I figured I had better explain it.) seems to hold true, it does not necessarily mean you can buy a world series. (Oh right, you asked about... pennants.) Who gives a shnit about pennants? The Red Sox ain't won one of those in... forever. But they won the world series more recently than the Spankees.

The Red Sox fell apart at the end of the year. I admit it. The Red Sox admit it. But the thing about the Red Sox, (other than the fact that they come from a much nicer city), is that they do their darndest to compete. Sometimes that means spending money. Other times it means letting overconfident fcuks like Nomar G. and J. Demon find another field to lie in.

The Sox will still have a lower payroll than NY. And as far as I know, Dontrelle Willis is staying with the Marlins.

No, because the Yankee's payroll for 2007 will still be higher than the payroll of the Red Sox (if you don't count the posting fee for Matsuzaka).
