Sometimes, there is nothing you can do to help a person with depression, except to encourage them to get professional help. In the meantime dont pester him, dont repeatedly ask if they are aright, as that will stress them out more. Just be there for him, give him a cuddle when he needs it, and leave him alone when he needs it. Sometimes with depression, here is no particular reason you feel so horrible, it is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and things wont get better without antidepressants. seeings you have acess to the net, maybe research depression a bit more, so you can fully understand the illness. They will have suggestions for how you can help.
Best of luck. My thoughts are with you both.

well first of all it would be very kind of you to make sure you let the individual know how much you do care for him and that you are very concerned about his well being {I my self happen to suffer from depression}and it would be so cool if you surprised your friend with a nice dinner and a movie date....{I suggest a commedy perhaps even take your friend to an ammusement park}man I wish some body would of done this for me when I was down and out ,but now I thank god that I made it through the stormy days and now Im able to give some body an honest and heart felt suggestion....good luck and I hope your friend fees better ,it seems to me he will !!!having you as a friend he couldnt go wrong.

Well I get depressed a lot and there is not much someone can do for me cause I don't want to be around someone when I am. Its just something I have to go through myself.
Thank goodness it don't last for too long. I simply go on line and find interesting and inspiring things to touch me.
Its nice knowing that someone does care when I get like that and they offer comfort for me and understand that I need alone time to get by. I also reasure them that I won't do anything stupid. Besides when I get down, I have my pets to comfort me.
I know this may sound weird but it is true. I need alone time to think and feel again.

Eat chocolate. It makes you feel better. No matter what. Also try going and seeing a movie or something like that. BONDING TIME is important so he knows your there for him, even if he doesn't want it.

He may need councelling or antidepressents. Is there an adult, like his parents who you can tell about his behavior change?
