My son (9.5 yrs) wants to build a multi-player online game with cool graphics for his classmates to play. I'm looking for something that is probably menu-based/drag and drop/GUI that is not so sophisticated or complex that he will be unable to get started. He has no programming experience and any introduction to programming would have to quickly lead to graphically pleasing results to keep him engaged. I looked at sites for several game engines (Torque, Unity) but they looked too sophisticated for a beginner. I would appreciate any suggestions and experiences to share. Thanks.

Try Gamemaker. its not real cool graphics but once you get good at it you can make it do anything. me and my friends spent 6 months designing a "final fantasy" type of a game. its not like the final fantasy from PS2 more like NES or SNES graphics but for beginners this program is perfect it is all drag and drop. the in program manual has every possible scripting that you would ever need. for the personalization of the game you could even add like your kids and his friends faces into the game as characters. if you decide to use this program, make sure you download the resources packs that are on the website. The program also comes with pomade games so that you can modify to suit you means. have fun with the sonic games, it is the original sonic game, i put myself in place of sonic and people i work with as the "mobs" in the game..

Good Luck

There really are no programs that someone like that can just pick up on. The internet building sites are the easiest things to make. If you really want him (or he really wants to) you can just get him the ones you found and let him explore with the feeling of how the program actually works. Let him goof around on the program and let him learn from his programming mistakes.

I'd reccommend the Tycoon games as well. They would probably like the Zoo Tycoon games.
