The turning point for Hitler was when he discovered he had an inate speaking ability that could captivate his audiences. Aside from his political desire, this oratorial skill mesmerized millions and, together with his earnings from the sale of "Mein Kampf, which outsold even the Bible in Germany, set him on the path to power. He drew on the widespread dissatisfaction caused by rampant unemployment and hyperiflation to gain wide popular support.

He played off a lot of fears and a lot of anger. Hitler manipulated fears such as Communism, Judaism, and economic ruin. People in Germany were very distrustful of Communism (keeping in mind how close the USSR was and international Communisms attempts to cause a revolution in Germany). Hitler was able to do what Richard Nixon would later do in the election of 1956 (where he VPed for Eisenhower), and that was be the better of two evils (that's a little presentist of me, I realize, but for the sake of my argument I think it's an okay way to say it). He played on fears of the Jews. People were pretty racist by our modern interpretation. Less should be made of this than the others though. Hitler's Final Solution (i.e. the Halocaust) was not a position held by the majority of Germany. He worked on economic fear. Germany was in a depression in the early 1930's and Hitler had a plan (so he said). He worked on anger left over from the Treaty of Versailles, which ended WW1. It placed all the blame on Germany (Article 231) and demanded severe reparations (132 billion gold marks is on often used approximation of the amount of money the Germans owed. That works out to $31.4 US as of 1918. Imagine that adjusted for inflation!). Unlike in the States where it was basically a 2 party system, German politics were more fragmented. The Nazi Party was only elected with either 33 or 36% of the vote (I can't remember which one it is even though I've had it told to me a thousand times). It was cunning political manoevering after that which allowed Hitler to eventually take control of the state. Hitler's best tactic was fragmenting politics and exploiting the fears and anger of the German people to barely scrape a minority government into power.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Germany was in a state of disarray...there was rampant unemployment, and a depressed economy. Hitler used that to convince people that if they followed him, he could make changes for the better. He started out doing just that...but as soon as he had the people where he wanted them, he changed into the madman that we know him to have been.

He started with rag-tag marches and poorly-attended speeches, but convinced the VOLK that they had been "stabbed in the back" by the Jews at home, causing Germany to lose the First World War.
