I think I have a ruby or possibly a pink sapphire. Does anyone know how to tell distinctively the difference between a ruby/pink sapphire and a...well rock. Also, it's about 2 pounds, and i bet about 1.3 or so is flawless. How much money would that be worth?

Well, it's hard to believe that description!

What I can tell you is ruby and sapphire are the same mineral! They are both Corrundom, the color is the only thing that is different in the name.

How 'bout a pic?

Telling the difference between ruby and pink sapphire is difficult as they are the same mineral (corundum Al2O3) but with different colouring agents. To be classed as ruby the colouring agent MUST be chromium. If corundum is coloured by any other element it is called sapphire plus the colour name e.g pink sapphire, blue sapphire or yellow sapphire. To distinguish between ruby and the other corundums a spectroscope is needed.
To have a specimen of the size and clarity you describe gives me very serious doubt that it is in fact corundum at all.
You really need to take it to a museum or a respectable jeweller to have it checked as without some form of testing equipment and the knowledge of how to use the instruments a home identification is not possible.. As to value if it was either pale ruby or pink sapphire you would find yourself very well off indeed.

i don't personally know how much money it would be worth but it is priceless in any case. it is of the earth, not man made. it is a gem.
