What's the deal with all of these crazy metal genres like speed death black progressive pirate metal? And now metalcore and hardcore have split off completely and begun their own collections of sub-genres? And why are so many of the fans so anal about getting the genres right? That band isn't metal, it's gothic metalcore!!! Is it really necessary for every band in a genre to sound exactly like every other band in the genre? Does the slightest deviation from the formula really deserve a seperate classification? Am I the only one who is extremely annoyed by this?

Yes! well done Sir! i agree. Actually , in all these "Johnny come Lately" metal genres , fashion seems to play almost MORE of an important role as to which band is what - and THAT was never supposed to be part of the blueprint. Also , since i come from the original source (where you actually had to have some chops), it bothers the hell outta me that it's not even required that you have to play well anymore, ....just look stupid.

Actually, the metal sub-genres in existence are only some 5 or 6 (death, black, power, epic, heavy, progressive, maybe one or two more).
All the rest are combinations of these.
"gothic" can hardly be put in metal. Anything -core is NOT metal. Symphonic is NOT a genre, but a description of how music sounds - whether it has a lot of choruses and classical instruments or not. If you're referring to Rhapsody with their "symphonic epic Hollywood film-score metal", they're a joke. Ignore that, and the bands who have 5 songs about pirates and want to be "pirate metal".
That's BSHT. Genres get labelled after the way they sound, the way music is composed, not what the lyrics sing about.

(now don't misunderstand me, people WILL describe a band as, example, "pagan folk viking black metal". but in this, ONLY "black" refers to the genre. All the rest of the words describe what the songs are about lyrics-wise, for the people who seek a band with certain themes.)

I hope this will clear it up for you :)

I agree with Ymmo, sub genres are used to separate the composure of music, and its not just the 'slightest deviation' when clasifying a band into a sub genre. To tell you the truth im more annoyed by kids who walk around saying that 'avenged sevenfold is so black metal'. Why is it that these kids walk around saying this? Other than the fact that they are retards, they dont understand how subgenres of metal are arranged, and i guess thats because of that whole 'lets just rock in the name of rock' motto. I dunno to me, all the sub-genres are pretty simple since theres not that many, for ex. 'grindcore, goregrind, pornogrind, noisegrind' are all "fusions/elements" of death metal, not completely different genres, and its pretty much the same with the rest of the sub-genres.

oh yeah and that whole "speed death black progressive pirate metal" joke was classic :)

well, i love metal. i remember when it was either rock or not. And while i first appreciated the genres, it has just gone out of control. I would be okay with even 5 genres, but like 45? that's psychotic. call me old-fashioned, but i prefered rock vs. not rock.

Ye gods i hate ppl who are so damn annoyed by everything, what the hell is it to you?!, f*cking pile of whiners have to find SOMETHING to complain over, i mean get a life, if it isnt threatining your family members or health, IGNORE it, as clearly its none of your concern.

call it whatever the hell you like, call it "look at my emo haircut metal" as your picture would suggest, who the hells gonna care about it!?, call it what you like,

and btw, i agree with the person with the leafy avatar,
