just patch the leaking part. You can use the same kind of roofing material and seal it with plastic roof cement.

Go to wal mart or hardware store and buy a can or a tube, if you have the tool for the tube, of tar for roofing and go up and put this on the hole or worn area. Sounds like the roof is in bad shape so any repairs will be temporary. This kind of roof usually doesn't last long. This is a quick fix. If you find it is worse than you thought buy some roofing felt and using roofing nails patch it, putting tar on each nail and under the edges of the paper and pray for it to hold, making sure no ends are left loose for the wind to pick up and rip off. Tack down around edges. Use roofing nails not anything else. Be careful and have someone else there in case you have problems, they can call for help. Never do those jobs while alone. If it is gravely, that means it is slippery, the gravel is loose and not a good traction for you to walk on, so plan accordingly. do this on the warmest day possible and just pstch the area that needs it, it's just a temporary fix. Good luck.

I have a flat roof... was tar and gravel but had it replaced last year with a type of latex. I believe that you replace just that particular area, scrape off the old strips ( i think that would or should take you to the bare wood). I dont know much (woman here) but I do know that years ago when I had my roof re-roofed (LOL) they stripped the old tar and gravel and replaced....no build up.
