Go the Flower Market; you´ll see the endless varieties of flowers!!
Go for a tour through the canals.
Rent a bike and cyple around the city, it´s not very big and there´s a wonderful bike lane.
Visit one of the Diamond Factories, amazing!
Munt Plein (Munt Square), there´s a beautiful tower there.
Rembrandt Plein (Rembrandt Square); there´s a wonderful representation in metal of The Night Watch; at night is just wonderful.
Go along Kalverstraat, a long, pedestrian shopping street.
Visit this site:

I found it really useful and try its webcam. I did so before going and found out the name of one of the shops there; then once there, I used to stand at a fixed time for a couple of minutes so that my children could see me from home!!
Visit the Churches; I loved Oude Kirke (Old Church); West Church seemed to be beautiful in the outside, but it was closed when I was there. Check this site for churches:

You should to the The Hague... in the forest there are bunkers left from world war 2. And you can acutally get a tour through one of them. The Anne Frank house takes FOREVER to get into.... it was a very small place, ya know. And a lot of people want to see it. So if you'ree going there, be prepared to stand in line for two hours. No joke.
You should go to madurodam... it's.. not a museum. But it had parts of holland on small scale, it's pretty neat. They have moving cars and such.
And if you're going to amsterdam, you should also drive over to germany or luxembourg... or. deng, I can;t remember wha't it's called.. but it;s where holland, germany, and...belgium? come together. That palce is pretty cool.
Just.....take your time. Look around. It;s a beautiful country!!!!

Holland and the Netherlands was the site of some intense fighting during World War II by American, Canadian, and British contingents of the allied forces. If you are a history buff, you may want to do some research on your own family to see if anyone was in WWII and if so, were they ever in the Netherlands.
I have two great uncles who were killed in the final days of the war in Netherlands. One I know is buried in the Canadian cemetery of war dead in Holten (East of Amsterdam). If you are into that kind of stuff, you can check out and pay respects to the men who fought and died for freedom and right.
There is also the Anne Frank House, which is now a museum.
There are several castles that can be toured, and since you are in Holland, you should at least try to find one windmill and see the statue of the Hans Brinker (The boy with his finger in the dyke)
Hope you enjoy the trip. That is one country that is on my list of places to go.

I recommend the Heinekin brewery (which is very non-traditional and quite fun), the house of Anne Frank, the Floating Chinese restaurant and if you're up for that sort of thing, a trip into the red light district at night is actually quite interesting - in a peverse sort of way. It certainly opened my eyes!
Have a great time :-)

I have been several times and these two are my top choices:
The Stedelijk Museum - one of the top museums in the world
The Heineken Brewery Tour - an hour of beer, munchies, and oom-pah music follows it... great fun!
