I'm writing a science-fiction book with a female main character, and would like to see what's on the market already. Most of the books I've found have male main characters. Do you know any titles? Did you like the books? Thanks everybody.

David Weber writes a very good series with a female Hero, Honor Harrington. The first novel in the series is "On Basilisk Station". The series is good and is even better if you know something about the the French Revolution and the French British war pre Nappy.

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix has female main characters - Sabriel (sabriel), Lirael (lirael) and Abhorsen (lirael.) and yes, I love them.

Anne McCaffrey as many people have written - although The Dragonsong trilogy with Menolly (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums) are her only books officially for young adults.

A great book that just got reprinted is "Enchantress from the Stars" by Sylvia Engdahl. this is the most sci-fi of the bunch (spaceships, a star trek like first contact, etc.) the other ones mentioned tend more towards fantasy (seems to be the more female-friendly part of the genre) although they can all be considered sci-fi in a sense and all have sci-fi elements.

I don't know if it's young adult, but Marion Zimmer Bradley has some female main characters in her Darkover series. Especially see the books about the Renunciates and Exile's Return. This is more fantasy, but I enjoyed the His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman and the main character is female.

This depends on your definition of science fiction, but one young adult book about an alternate future with a strong female lead is How We Live Now by Meg Rosoff

also a post-nuclear book for young adults:

Padkayne of Mars, by Robert Heinlein (an oldie). Main character Podkayne Fries.

Friday, by Robert Heinlein.

Trinity Street, by Sally Odgers, HarperCollins. Main character Estelle "Tell" Clancy.

Dragonsong, by Anne McCaffrey. Main character Menolly.

In fact, many of Anne McCaffrey's sf books have female protagonists.

I've written (but haven't edited or published) a book with a female main character. I do this out of habit, but having a female main character is not as common as having a male main character.

However, originality counts... if your story line suits her, then by all means...

GL!

The only one I can think of is "The Girl Who Owned a City". Sorry I don't remember who wrote it. There was another one called "Children of the Dust" that had a strong female character, but I don't think she was the main character. Wait, one more-"Invitation to the Game".
