The Cichlid is philopatric, or site tenacious, i.e. - individuals are non-migratory and prefer to stay within a home temperature range.

The cichlid needs a minimum temperature requirement of about 14 degrees Celsius, though this is optimum lowest. In its native range, it inhabits waters with temperatures from 18 - 34 degrees Celsius, but its optimal temperature range is 28 - 33 degrees Celsius.

Cichlid is capable of surviving in a variety of conditions. It is euryhaline and can survive in a range of salinity from 0 - 40 ppt. Experiments on captive specimens have shown that it can tolerate abrupt increases in salinity of up to 15 ppt (Martinez-Palacios et al. 1990). Cichlid has a broad range of tolerance to abiotic conditions and a broad behavioural repertoire to enable it to feed on a variety of foods.

Remember that there is no right answer to any question about 'cichlids' because cichlids comprise a great variety of fish from all over the globe and have different behaviours, needs, and tolerences.

Speaking as a general rule though, if you can't keep the temperature at at least 72 you should probably consider cold water fish instead. As an optimum temeperature it depends on species and you should research based on your own fish, but most commonly the ideal temperature will be 76-78.

It really depends on the type of cichlid. Some can handle cooler water temperatures than others can. A heater is ideal for keeping the water temperature constant so it doesn't fluctuate. When water temps change a lot, it's very stressful for the fish in the tank. A heater just acts to stablize the temps within about a degree.

Cichlids are tropical. PetCo says 72-82. I was remembering 75 degrees. I raised Africans for a while. Most cichilds are aggressive. Make sure they have enough room. Some like lake salts.
