Because most of the police officers can not handle the emotional drain upon them from cases over and over. They start to shut themselves down, drink or become over protective.

All the other postings are correct in saying there is a lot of stress, time away from home, not trusting non-law enforcement folks, etc. Unfortunately, another aspect that can be a reality for officers, especially younger ones, is that there are usually many opportunities to cheat or at least meet someone new. We meet a lot of new woman on the job at bars, schools, coffee shops, etc . Those women can be a little more forward then they normally would be because in uniform we seem more approachable and harmless. This presents officers with a lot of options and sadly can lead to the wife getting left behind. I know this isn't very romantic and is certainly a generalization (not applicable to all or even most cops) but it's just my take on it.

Law enforcement is a highly stressful field for both officer and the officer's spouse. That level of stress can be damaging to the individuals and the marriage if the officer or the spouse is unable to handle it.

Stress. Police officers see things most people never see or want to see. You go to a violent homicide and see a body torn apart in an automobile crash and it starts to work on your psyche. After a while, the stress bleeds over into your personal life and what you see effects you for life. Most officers suffer from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) from what they see and go through.

Over time, you tend to not trust anyone that isn't a cop. It happens to all officers. This mistrust sometimes is presented onto your spouse who is supposed to be your life partner and best friend. You stop talking about your day because you want to forget and it all bottles up inside you and eventually, you blow up and usually take it out on the ones who love you the most. Kind of sick if you stop and think about it. It takes a special kind of person to be a cop.

I'm not sure exactly but it is. I dated an officer and he was a control freak and on the verge of being abusive, it was like the uniform was him and it didn't matter if it was on or off he still had to have control. We broke up because I became scared of him and I was worried that he was gonna lose control and hit me. So that was my case, not sure about other women's.

I think it has too do with not being able to spend alot of time with their wife and kids. not having your partner around to help do things and grow in the relationship can put strain on the marriage. you need two people working at a marriage to make it work and when they work all the time its hard to keep it going
