I prefer a dip but if anyone else is around I'll go for a plunge because 9 times out 10 I'm going to get thrown in anyway.

plunge, when you dip into something you try to avoid it because you see how cold it is, but when you plunge you have no choice but to deal with it and you get used to it anyway.
